The Benefits of Coconut Oil

Have you ever wondered how one product can have so many uses and so many benefits. Every morning I start my day with a moth full of coconut oil, held and swished around for 10-20 minutes. (This is called oil pulling and helps detoxify your mouth and body) Then I put a teaspoonful into my green tea and lemon juice. After showering and washing my face and body with numerous coconut products, I use coconut oil to moisturise my face and entire body. Then it’s back to the kitchen for smoothies with coconut oil added to them and so the days goes on. Why, you ask?

Because Coconut Oil aids and improves digestion, it detoxifies, relieves stress, aids in weight loss and management, helps mineral absorption, stops sugar cravings and regulates blood sugar levels, boosts metabolism, supports immunity and thyroid function, is a natural moisturiser, slows wrinkles, restores damaged and diseased skin, is anti inflammatory, anti viral, anti bacterial and anti fungal …….. to name a few.

You see, nearly 50% of the fat in coconut oil is of a type rarely found in nature called Lauric Acid, a miracle compund because of it’s unique health promoting properties. Our body converts Lauric Acid into Monolaurin, which has anti viral and anti bacterial properties. Coconut Oil is also nature’s richest source of ‘medium-chain fatty acids’ (MCFA’s) which are easily digested and immediately burned by the liver for energy – like carbohydrates, but without the insulin spike. MCFA’s actually boost your metabolism and help your body use fat for energy, as opposed to storing it, so it can actually help you become leaner.

By contrast, most commonly used vegetable and seed oils are comprised of long-chain fatty acids which are difficult for our bodies to break down and are predominantly stored as fat.

In the 1940’s, farmers discovered this by accident when they tried to use inexpensive coconut oil to fatten their livestock. Instead, coconut oil made the animals lean, active and hungry.

Coconut oil has been shown to help optimise body weight, dramatically reducing the risks of developing Diabetes. Besides weight loss, boosting your metabolism will improve energy levels, accelerate healing and improve overall immune function. Studies have also shown that MCFA’s can enhance physical and athletic performance.

Dr Nicholas Perricone, certified Dermatologist, Nutritionist and author of The Perricone Promise, and many more books on the topic of weight loss and anti ageing, had this to say about coconut oil – “Virgin Coconut Oil speeds weight loss, lowers cholesterol, reduces the risk of heart attack and improves diabetic conditions. Coconut Oil is beneficial to the immune system because it has antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Coconut Oil targets the Thyroid and beefs up the metabolism, melting away belly fat quickly. With all these benefits, organic virgin coconut oil is a powerful nutrient that should be incorporated into your diet.”

Cooking in omega-6 vegetable oils produces a variety of toxic chemicals, as well as forming trans fats. Frying destroys the antioxidants in oils, oxidising them and causing even worse problems for our bodies. Most vegetable oils are genetically modified including more than 90% of soy, corn and canola oils. Vegetable oils contribute to an overabundance of damaged omega-6 fats in our diets, throwing off the balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fats in our bodies. Western society consumes almost 100 times more omega-6 fats today than we did a century ago, and insufficient omega-3 fats, which is contributing to numerous chronic degenerative diseases.

Coconut Oil is a highly stable fat that does not oxidise when heated, making it a very safe and healthy cooking oil. Some brands do have a stronger flavour than others, most only have a mild coconut taste/smell and you’ll get used to that very quickly. So if you don’t like the first one you try, get a different brand. Keep searching until you find the one you like. It may be a Gourmet version that works for you as these are slightly more processed to eliminate that smell and taste. Also, you won’t need to use as much coconut oil as other oils when you cook with it as it is much more liquid. It will solidify in temperatures under 24 degrees, even here on the sunny Gold Coast, but won’t take long to melt down. During winter I like to keep my jars in the linen cupboard with my hot water cyclinder as I like to keep it liquid (I’m spoilt, I know, having my hot water cyclinder inside. I love it)

And finally, coconut oil is incredibly good for your heart. The truth is that it is unsaturated fats that are primarily responsible for heart disease, too much sugar and processed foods, not the naturally occurring saturated fats as we have been led to believe.

There are so many uses for this amazing oil apart from cooking and using it in other food preparations. Make Up remover, massage oil, moisturiser, soothing bug bites and bee stings, bath soak, cuticle oil, in your dogs water to freshen his breath, hair and scalp moisturiser, anything that needs an oil carrier or that you can mix with an oil. Mix with Tea Tree oil to help treat athletes foot and other fungal infections. Make a face scrub with cinnamon and ground rolled oats (oatmeal) and the list goes on. And of course consuming by the spoonful everyday to boost immunity, digestion and thyroid function. The list goes on. I hope you will exchange the oils you are using now for a few jars of Organic Coconut Oil and experience the differences for your self. Your body will thank you for it.

With Love and Gratitude, Chelle xx
